I watched 21st Century Schools and how Google saved a school. This Bronx school implemented the use of technology in the classroom, in which everyone received a laptop. I thought it was very interesting how the level of proficiency in Math was at 9% before the use of computers in the classroom and then after the use of computers in the classroom the level of Math Proficiency rose to 62%. One student mentions how he likes the computers. The teacher emails the students assignments to work, and then the students use email, search engines and other resources to accomplish the classwork; he feels independent and involved. Nonetheless, students are distracted by the computer; students mess around on My-space and gaming sites to pass the time. But being a realist I understand computers or no-computers in the classroom students will still drift off into La-La Land. We should not blame technology for bad pedagogy. I am definitely in favor of technology in the classroom. I liked what the Principal stated in the video, "technology is like oxygen, no one will make an argument against oxygen." Rightfully so, students will be using technology outside the classroom and its time for teachers to embrace it inside the classroom- in a proper manner.
I agree that teachers need to embrace the use of technology in the classroom. Since it is so involved in our society, It shouldn't take so long for teachers to incorporate technology into the classroom. As long as students don't have freedom to do anything on computers, technology will only help the classroom
ReplyDeleteBrad I agree with you that no matter what, kids are going to drift off.Even though there are draw backs to a technology centered classroom, the same can be said about any model. Like you said, "technology is like oxygen", if it is here to stay, why not make the best use out of it and take the lead.
ReplyDeleteThis video really made me more comfortable with the prospect of being submerged in technology in future classrooms. Normally I am dismissive of technology, but at least in this instance, it appears to have had very positive results. I agree that teachers need to embrace technology, because even if you're like me and not very computer savy, this is the world we live in, and that is the direction that classrooms are going in.
ReplyDeleteI like your statement that student's will still drift off even with computers. I agree but think it will be even less than before. Students with laptops have more things to focus on and be engaged in as opposed to traditional teaching methods.
